Organic
food is a buzz-word in our vocabularies, but many of us might not know
what it really means. A definition taken directly from the USDA website
states that organic food is "food produced by farmers who emphasize
the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water
to enhance environmental quality for future generations." In other
words, organic foods use virtually no conventional chemicals, pesticides,
fungicides, herbicides, and every-other-kind-of-cides that have proliferated
our everyday lives and what we consume.
Not
anybody can use the "organic" label on their food products.
A government agent must inspect the farm where the food is grown, then
certify the farm or organization before the "USDA ORGANIC"
label can be used. This label tells the consumer that at least 95% of
the product is organic. The use of the seal is voluntary; however, any
organization that uses "organic" labels without govenment
approval faces up to a $10,000 fine for each violation of the "organic"
label. Moreover, "organic" should not be confused with natural,
free-range, and hormone-free.
With
a new global awareness of environmental preservation and health, more
and more people look for the "organic" label. Cafe Madrid,
SA is aware of your concerns and we have created a delicious line of
